SPCA Delivers First Child

If you've never been to the SPCA (a local shelter for dogs and cats in the DFW area) then be prepared to take a cat or dog home if you do. That's exactly what happened to me in 1999.

I had been thinking about adding to my family at the time. I was single but dating and thought a neat little dog would help me adjust my life around taking care of something. Mom had told me I had a self-centered life and needed to learn about taking care of someone besides me. I agreed.

I had no idea what I was about to get into. Thanks mom.

Upon visiting the SPCA that day I walked in a saw this cute little black dog sitting in cage. He saw me and started whimpering. They told me he was a Jack Russell mix and that he had been found outside in the rain near Longview. Apparently he was abused by his owners and they decided to drop him off in the rain along a highway. How sad. I thought he was cute but I still wanted to look around. I liked this other red haired dog too.

As I prepared to walk out I looked over and again saw this cute little black dog staring at me. He whimpered again, wagged his tail and gave me this look that said, "I'm not gonna make it if you don't get me outta here." With the passed down, family trait "sucker" written on my forehead (thanks dad), I gave in.

On the way home, I decided I needed to make my first stop at the local pet supply store. The SPCA had put the dog in this carry box, if you will, with a handle on the top. It had little holes in it so he could see out and breathe. I left him in the box in the front seat as I ran in. He didn't seem to like being in there too much but I'd only be gone a second.

Well, I came back to find the dog sitting in the front seat waiting on me with this silly grin on his face. He had literally shredded that box from the inside out into a million little pieces that were now all over my car! He did all of this in less than 10 minutes. Yep, life as I had known it was about to change...

That was the beginning of things with my first "child". He would provide me many more stories, laughter and worry over the years to come. But, I'm glad the SPCA rescued this "little black dog" for me. He became my best friend.

I named him Max.

Behind Closed Doors

Max is a funny animal. He is very needy and very emotional. Funny to say that about a dog but he is. Has been since I got him from the SPCA as an abused dog in 1999. He has to be near you no matter where you are or what you are doing.

Sometimes this leaves room for a funny event.

We have a piano room in the front of our house. I play and have since I was a kid. It helps me relax and get in tune with myself and God. The room is neat. I installed two French doors with etched glass panels so one can see in when I am playing and yet it keeps the noise down and the room separated from the rest of the house.

Well, as usual Max came in the room while I played and sat and watched. I played for about an hour and then went about my other chores that day. It was a Saturday so I had a lot of things to get done.

About 3 hours later, I noticed Max was nowhere to be seen. I called his name and started looking all over for him. NOTE - He keeps his "bags backed" by the door in the event of an open door for a quick escape (he likes to be free...part of the nature of a terrier). So I was getting a little concerned he might be gone. I got Julie in on the search and we both started getting worried. An "Amber alert" was around the corner mind you.

After some time I walked up to go out the front door and out of the corner of my eye, I saw him. There he was. Sitting there looking all sad, with his nose to the glass, locked in the piano room!

I guess I shut the door out of habit on him. He had been in there no less than 2 hours. He looked at me like, "hey, really appreciate the music and all, but could you let me out? I really gotta pee."

I laughed at him, opened the door and he went straight outside.

Guess it was music to both of our ears. I hadn't lost my first dog after all, and he was finally free, once again.

You Won't Believe What Sam Thought Was a Toy....

We had come home for church to change clothes and then left to go eat lunch. We weren't even gone 2 hours as we arrived back after stuffing ourselves at one of our local Arlington favorites. We opened the door and to my dismay Sam had once again gotten himself in a little trouble.

See, both of the boys have gotten into the bad habit of finding things on our kitchen counter while we are away. We are sure Max compells Sam to stand up and drag whatever is on the counter off onto the floor so Max can then tear it to shreds. Though we have not proven this via hidden "nanny cam", we know it to be true. You can see it on their guilty faces.

This day was another one of those times.

Anyway, we came in and to my surprise there were cotton balls strewn all over the place. Sam had gotten them off the counter and both had decided it was fun to string them all over the living room floor. But, it gets better.

See, Sam has this tradition of bringing us a toy in his happiness of us coming home. Anytime we come home he does his "bean dance" as we call it, grabs a toy and runs around in circles, in pure delight. It is totally hilarious. He will not stop until he finds a toy to bring you either....

Well, on this day he ran outside to get his toy (we have a doggie door) and came bounding back in with one in his mouth. I didn't recognize it either. But upon further inspection.....it was an ENTIRE LOAF of wheat bread! LOL! Evidently he had gotten Julie's expensive bread, bought at Whole Foods Market 20 miles from our house, and we both totally died laughing.

He looked so darn cute and he obviously had no clue that this was NOT a toy and NOT a thing he should be proudly demonstrating to his loving parents! We tried to scold him, but just threw the bread away and laughed into the night....

Sometimes it's all you can do.

Fisheye Boys

Ever wonder how they make those cards they sell of dogs at Target or Petsmart? Now you know...they use a "fisheye" lens. I have one for my 20D SLR Canon and used it on them. Aren't they hilarious? Took these this spring......

More funny stories and pictures to come...

The Kidney Bean Dance

Sam has this dance. We call it the "kidney bean dance"...it goes like this.

We come home or a visitor comes over.
He goes and finds a toy or something else he can put in his mouth.
He proudly brings it to you.
He shakes his entire back end (nub and butt) to the point where he nearly falls down.
He then runs in cirlces, bucking like a bronco and snorting 'cause of the item in his mouth.
(repeat steps above)

"The Boys" Blog Coming Soon!

Check out the blog for our boys from time to time for funny pics and stories. They are a huge part of our family and are two of the most funny creatures God has ever created! They keep us laughing and crying all at the same time.

They are in for a world of shock when the girls arrive and take their place in September!
